Explosion at DIC EP’s Kashima Plant (First Report)

Tokyo, Japan–An explosion occurred today at the Kashima Plant of DIC EP Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of DIC Corporation.

DIC sincerely regrets any inconvenience or concern caused to residents of nearby communities and persons associated with the Kashima Plant. The Company extends its deepest condolences to the individuals and families directly affected by this accident.

As of 5:30 pm today, the following details have been ascertained regarding this accident:

Date and time:September 6, 2018, approx. 1:50 pm
Location:Engineering plastics production floor, Kashima Plant, DIC EP Corp. (18, Higashifukashiba, Kamisu, Ibaraki, Japan)
During welding of an outdoor storage tank, a spark ignited gas within the tank, causing an explosion without fire.
Casualties:1 dead, 1 injured (both employees of a subcontractor)
Damage to property:Under investigation
Impact on the environment:Under investigation
Impact on nearby communities:Under investigation; currently no such impact has been reported
Causes and actions taken:Appropriate measures are being implemented in accordance with instructions issued by the local fire department and guidance from relevant authorities.
