The CERANATE are hybrid resins in which inorganic components (polysiloxane) are combined with organic components (acrylic resin). They provide long-term protection and aesthetics of the coated object and reduce maintenance cost. Buildings, bridges, and other structures must not only be durable, but also have excellent stain resistance against airborne particulate matter, otherwise require a short maintenance cycle for cleaning and repainting.
Conventional resins for high weather resistant paints, such as fluoropolymers, still have problems with stain resistance. In addition, there is a trend in the market to tighten regulations on the use of fluorinated compounds. CERANATE, organic-inorganic hybrid resins, overcome these problems and are maintenance-free exterior coating resins that maintains aesthetic appearance for a long period of time. A wide range of products are available, including waterborne, solventborne, and UV curable types, to meet various conditions such as regulations against the use of solvents, coating environment, applications, and substrates.
From the measurement principle that the polysiloxane phase appears darker and the acrylic phase appears lighter, we can observe the form of the sea island structure in which polysiloxane is uniformly dispersed in acrylic at nano level in the composite resin coating film (a).
On the other hand, polysiloxane is unevenly distributed in the acrylic in the blend coating (b).

Waterborne CERANATE are 2K resins that can achieve similar or superior film performance to solventborne coatings. You can select either waterborne isocyanate curing type or epoxy-silane curing type according to required properties such as weather resistance, workability, etc. There is an increasing demand of epoxysilane curing type due to awareness of regulations against the use of isocyanates. Products with urethane structure not only have flexibility and weather resistance but can also be used as 1K coatings.
Solventborne CERANATE are 2K resins to be used in combination with isocyanate hardener. They provide better properties compared to waterborne type in drying, appearance, and adhesion, making them suitable for various substrates and performance requirements. Therefore, they can be used not only for architectural applications like waterborne type, but for industrial and other applications as well.
UV curing CERANATE, by using as protective coatings for plastic materials such as PET and polycarbonate resins, can extend the life of the substrate and also improve its scratch resistance. From the sustainability perspective, the use of lightweight and recyclable plastic materials has increased, and their applications are expanding to architectural exteriors, solar cells and automotive exterior parts. The use of general UV curable resins for exterior components has been limited due to yellowing caused by outdoor exposure and cracking caused by curing shrinkage. However, CERANATE, with high weather resistance, and flexibility provided by isocyanate curing, can be used for exterior applications. Because of its good adhesion to glass, it is being deployed to a wider range of applications.
