Tokyo, Japan—DIC Corporation announced today that it has resolved to terminate operations at the 4-tertiary butylphenol (PTBP) production facility of wholly owned subsidiary DIC Alkylphenol Singapore Pte., Ltd., and withdraw from the PTBP business by June 2023.

PTBP, an alkylphenol produced from phenol and isobutylene, is used as a molecular weight modifier for polycarbonate resin and as a raw material for synthetic resins, printing inks and fragrances. The DIC Group began producing PTBP at DIC Alkylphenol Singapore in 2004, after which all Group production of this material was centralized at the company. However, owing to changes in the business environment in Asia, it was determined that maintaining competitiveness going forward would be difficult.

As outlined in its long-term management plan, DIC Vision 2030, which kicked off in February 2022, the DIC Group has adopted return on invested capital (ROIC) as a metric for evaluating investment efficiency and earning power, and is promoting ROIC management. This move reflects the Group’s commitment to making new investments in growth, as well as to promoting business portfolio transformation to focus on highly profitable businesses and on improving capital efficiency.
