DIC's resource recycling technology
enables high-quality plastic recycling!
It enables the realization
of the plastic SDGs
The idea of recycling polystyrene
The problem of waste plastics is getting worse,
and strengthening the resource recycling system is an urgent issue
Polystyrene food containers are widely used because they are (1) lightweight and easy to carry, (2) easy to process and color, and (3) impervious to moisture and effectively protect food. Used containers are sorted and collected by municipalities, and businesses recycle them into raw materials such as resin, but a considerable amount is disposed of as general waste, incinerated or landfilled.
On the other hand, illegally dumped plastic waste flows into rivers and the sea, adverselyaffecting the marine environment including ecosystems, ship navigation, tourism and fisheries, and coastal areas.
Accelerating tightening of regulations on “non-recycling”packages

As countries around the world have tightened their import regulations on waste plastics, Japan, which used to export waste plastics as recycled raw materials, has lost a place to go.
It is In order to overcome these issues, we must review the one-way approach to plastic containers, promote the development of new technologies and mechanisms for resource recycling, curb the consumption of oil resources and energy, and reduce the amount of waste generated. it won't work.
The Challenge of “Chemical Recycling”with Great Possibilities
Material recycling is the mainstream plastic recycling method in Japan, and there are very few achievements in chemical recycling, which uses chemical reactions to recycle resources. However, in order to realize the advanced recycling society that the world is aiming for, there is a limit to material recycling alone, and it is said that the development and expansion of chemical recycling is essential.
The "Polystyrene Complete Recycling Model" launched by DIC and the FP CorporationGroup can be said to be a touchstone that shows society the possibilities of chemical recycling in the future. DIC's project team has established a "monomer reduction technology" that converts polystyrene back to styrene, enabling the development of a wide variety of materials.

Why is it possible to realize a rapid approach while recycling polystyrene with high quality?
3 reasons to choose DIC's complete circulation model
DIC‘s diverse recycling technologies
1)Chemical recycling
Polystyrene, produced from styrene obtained from chemical recycling, has the same performance and safety as polystyrene produced from petroleum feedstock. Hence, they can be used in diverse application without any limitation.
2)Dissolution and Separation Recycling
(De-inking chemical process)
This is a new approach to colored containers that are difficult to recycle.
DIC's unique dissolution and separation technology facilitates the decolorization of colored containers.
The full circular model is the execution phase.
DIC will proceed with verification studies within FP Corporation's recycling system, which has already achieved store collection and recycling of waste plastics. DIC is now in the implementation phase for the biggest issue in the complete circulation model, “recovery of raw materials from the market.”
Proposal capabilities unique to a comprehensive chemical manufacturer.
DIC offers a wide range of packaging materials and solutions, including printing inks, films, and adhesives, in addition to polystyrene. We have sustainable technologies suitable for a recycling society for each product, such as biomass, mono-materials, de-inking, and resealing.
Challenge to traceability
Strong reliability from consumers
by installing traceability systems for waste plastics
Traceability of waste plastics and bio-raw materials:
Collaboration with SAP
DIC uses SAP's GreenToken system to track raw materials along the supply chain from the initial stage of production, with the aim of visualizing the manufacturing and inspection processes, physical properties and quality information of recycled and bio-based materials. As a result, when customers use recycled plastics or bioplastics, they can indicate how much recycled material the product contains.
