DNW Series/WE Series Acrylic for Aqueous Two-component Coatings

Two-component-cured/aqueous acrylic urethane resins composed of water-dispersible polyisocyanate and aqueous acrylic polyol.

Easy Dispersibility Makes Hand Stirring Possible

DNW-5500 before and after water dispersion

DNW Series water-dispersible polyisocyanate demonstrates excellent dispersibility by formulating with a specialized dispersant. This makes hand stirring possible which can greatly simplify the stirring process.
Polyisocyanate can be dispersed in water with simple stirring because of a specialized dispersant that possess hydrophobic groups and hydrophilic groups. In the particles after water dispersion, the dispersant's hydrophobic groups are oriented to the inside and the hydrophilic groups are oriented to the outside, so the isocyanate groups exist stably in water (see the water-dispersed particle illustration).
The result is that over 90% of isocyanate groups still exist after eight hours elapse since water dispersion (see the isocyanate group stability after water dispersion graph below).

As fundamental performance, we evaluated stability in 25°C water. 10 g of DNW-5500 and 40 g of water were mixed together, 0 hours was set after stirring for 5 minutes, and the remaining isocyanate groups were measured every hour. Typical water-dispersible products from competitors were also evaluated.

Coating Film Physical Properties Comparable to Solvent-based Types

While being an aqueous type, DNW Series/WE Series acrylic demonstrates coating film physical properties comparable to solvent-based products.

  1. Hydrophilic components in the coating film are reduced by the specialized dispersant designed to be dispersible with a small amount of hydrophilic groups.
  2. The isocyanate groups in water are stable in water and they effectively promote the cross-linking reaction with active hydrogen-containing groups like hydroxyl groups that have little reactivity with water.

WE-301 and WE-303 were used as aqueous acrylic polyol. DNW-5500 was used as water-dispersible polyisocyanate. For comparison, DIC's common solvent-based two-component cured acrylic urethane composed of solvent-based acrylic polyol and polyisocyanate (shown as solvent-based) and a typical one-component acrylic emulsion were used. For weather resistance, WE-301 is on a level that compares favorably with solvent-based products. There was also a large difference with one-component acrylic emulsions that do not possess cross-linking.

Environmentally-friendly Design

As shown in the graph below, VOCs (volatile organic compounds) can be greatly reduced by using DNW Series/WE Series.
